Unlock the Essential Value of Kata Forms

Learn karate kata at Victory Karate—from beginner forms building stances, blocks, and strikes to the Pinan series.

At Victory Karate we teach a variety of forms starting with beginner forms that build core stances, blocks, and strikes. We refer to these forms using the Japanese numbers ichiban, niban, sanban, and shebang.

Our intermediate karate forms switch to the Pinan series. These forms (Pinan 2, 4, and 5) emphasize fluid transitions, cat stances (for Pinan 4), advanced weight shifting and jumping. These forms not only emphasize stances and strikes, but also balance. They support dynamic movement. Additionally, they prepare students for more advanced sequences and timing.

Finally, we have several advanced forms to include Hwarang and Naihanchi. Hwarang is named after a youth warrior group from in the ancient Korean Silla kingdom. This form emphasizes palm heel strikes and middle punches, square blocks and reverse upset punches, twin knife-hand blocks, side/roundhouse kicks and low-section defense combined with counter-strikes. Naihanchi is a traditional form (kata) known for its linear, side-to-side movement along a single lateral axis.

Forms are a great means to train the mind as well as the body in fluid movement. Moreover, karate practice, through forms, greatly improves coordination, memorization, and overall learning. Additionally, when training and learning forms, students not only build limber, flexible bodies but also nimble minds.

Additionally, we hope you will join us in karate and learn these special forms.

Why Learn Sparring?

Victory Karate in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Victory Karate in , Maryland is one of the few martial arts schools that teaches sparring as part of the curriculum for kids and adults. Why do we emphasize sparring and what is the secret to our success?

First, concerns over sparring are very common. Our fears range from concerns about getting hit or hurting our opponent. As a parent, we might be anxious about the wellbeing of our child. We also don’t want our kids to learn to be aggressive. Victory Karate helps kids and adults work through these fears by engaging students in sparring drills in a SAFE, constructive format. We emphasize light contact with kicks and punches only going to the body. We also emphasize footwork, strategy, and simply getting a feeling for the sport.

Our sparring sessions are taught by national champions who have years of experience sparring and teaching sparring techniques. Our instructors make our sparring sessions a truly unique environment.

So why do we emphasize sparring, when so many other schools shy away from it. Simply put, we are teaching martial arts, primarily karate and Taekwondo. Kids and adults become stronger physically and less fearful from our classes. They also develop a bond with each other very quickly as they learn how to spar. Techniques such as keeping your guard up, staying sideways, defensive side kicks to keep your opponent away, bouncing, etc. help develop a martial artist. A student also learns to defend him/herself through sparring.

Finally, sparring is a lot of fun and a great cardio vascular workout. Come out to Victory Karate and try our classes to learn sparring in a safe environment.

Why Do We Learn Forms?

What are karate forms? Learn how kata develop essential stances, blocks, and synchronized movement patterns for martial arts students.

Forms, or kata in Japanese, are a simulated, sequence of moves designed to develop the basic martial arts movements. Forms help students work on the key stances (e.g. front, back, and horse stance) and blocks (e.g. low, high and middle block). Perhaps, most importantly forms are synchronized patterns of movement that are done in a group setting, building teamwork and comradery.

When one is first introduced to a form, it seems that the movements are very hard to remember. Learning the moves can be frustrating, but it trains the mind as well as the body in certain movements that are used throughout karate. As you learn more forms, you will notice similar patterns allowing a martial artist to pick up new forms very quickly.

There are many benefits to learning forms. First, and foremost, they help martial artists learn the basics and build muscle memory as well as focus. They also enable students to track their progression as forms take on various levels of difficulty. As a student works up through the belt system, he will learn and conquer increasingly more difficult forms. Finally, when done with vigor, forms can be an excellent form of exercise.

As you prepare for your belt test, recognize that the form you are learning is just one in a sequence of forms that you will be mastering over the course of your martial arts career.

The benefits of karate classes for adults and kids vary. Each age group derives their own benefits.

      Adults and Karate

Adults, particularly those over 35 years of age, often benefit the most from improved flexibility, balance, and fitness. In karate, we do a lot of kicks, (i.e. round kicks) that help to loosen up the hips. The kicks will push the synovial fluid through the hips, which will improve flexibility and strength. You may also get some range of motion back that has been lost through atrophy.

Karate will also improve your fitness so that you can come closer to obtaining the lean figure or physique you may have always wanted. It is often difficult for adults to get in the kind of physical shape they want due to the sedentary lifestyle that accompanies a desk job. Certainly, committing to a program that improves fitness is a great avenue to enhancing one’s physical well-being. In karate, we work on your core and upper body strength. We do this through abdominal exercises and push-ups. In addition, the kicking motion will continually use these muscles. Don’t be surprised if you are a little sore at first.

Many adults also prefer karate over the gym because they are training with a group and working toward a goal (e.g. a higher belt). Thus, karate is less likely to get stale or routine.

“I had to give up running due to joint pain and a bad hip. After doing karate for roughly a year, I started to run again. While karate didn’t make my joint pains go away, it helped strengthen my hips so that I could to do many of the activities again that I had previously given up.”

      Kids and Karate

The benefits of karate for kids are often very different to those for adults. Children come to us with so much energy that needs to get released. A karate program offers a child the opportunity to release this energy in a safe place and have a lot of fun in the process. We include various games, such as dodgeball in our children’s karate program. Our instructors are tasked to teach children all of the kicks and blocks while keeping kids entertained.

Karate can also provide many life-long skills to a child, such as improved focused and resilience. In class, we help children train their mind to engage in purposeful motion through the forms and kicking combinations. We also help children gain confidence as they progress through the belt system. Children and adults may feel a bit inadequate when they start, but then as they obtain new belts, they gain the confidence of achievement. In time, with persistence children and adults start to perceive themselves as martial artists. Becoming a martial artist will enhance a student’s belief in their physical ability. The ultimate achievement is obtaining the black belt, which validates a student as a martial artist.
